In Middle Age, how long could peasant store wheat or barley? more than three years? ?

In modern times, using anti-fungal or anti-insect chemical, you can store wheat or flour for a long time (more than 5-10 years). But during Medieval time, how long could they store grains? Did they store years of stock in case of famine?
